To me, the first step is to understand and be clear about what sustainability means in the context where you are making the decision. Mining industry practices are experienced first and foremost by people and communities. They may experience them as employment pathways and opportunities for young people, concerns about dust, noise, traffic and other impacts, feeling heard and listened to and seeing a healthy environment for current and future generations. While you may have good strategies in place, without understanding this local context – what is important to people and communities at a particular point in time – it is difficult to make sustainability decisions that will have longevity.

In its simplest terms, sustainability is about building and operating a business in a way you and others can be proud of, others want to work for and with and that will leave a positive legacy long beyond when current leaders move on. This enables organisations to better understand the short, medium and long-term risks, opportunities and trade-offs of different decisions, better positioning for long-term financial outcomes.
