While you may have good strategies in place, without understanding this local context – what is important to people and communities at a particular point in time – it is difficult to make sustainability decisions that will have longevity.

When sustainability efforts ignore community realities, such as cultural values, local knowledge, or existing vulnerabilities, initiatives risk being ineffective or even harmful. Prioritising the community aspect first ensures that solutions are relevant, inclusive, and enduring. It also strengthens accountability and fosters co-designed outcomes, where those most affected have a say in shaping their future.

Community engagement is central to sustainable development. Projects that prioritise local needs foster trust, reduce social risk, and create shared value. To me, the first step is to understand and be clear about what sustainability means in the context where you are making the decision. For example, while a resources company have overarching environmental, social and governance goals, the risks, impacts and opportunities arising from different decisions will vary considerably between sites. Without a good understanding of this context, you are often missing important data and knowledge to make a more informed decision.

Embedding sustainability into daily decisions starts with making it visible in everyday planning, not just strategy documents.
