I keep seeing the term ‘cumulative impact’ in project documents. Is that just a fancy way of saying things might get worse?

A cumulative impact is the combined effect of multiple developments over time. Even if one project has minimal impact, when combined with others (e.g. housing, roadworks, mining), the overall pressure on a community or environment can be significant.
For example:
- One project brings 200 workers = moderate housing pressure
- Add another project next door = no rentals left, health services overwhelmed
- Add a new transport route = road congestion and safety issues
These layered effects often fall through the cracks unless a cumulative impact assessment is done properly. Communities are best placed to notice these patterns.
Would you like a checklist to help document what you’re seeing in your area?
